Journal of an Event Photographer: Post-Event Processing of Event Photos
For Digital Photography:
During Event:
Snap away and ensure that the memory space is fully utilised (fully utilised need not be fully used). NOTE: The advantage of digital is the larger amount of photos that can be taken in one standing as compared to traditional and the re-usability of the media (memory cards VS film).
1st Available Moment with PC after Event:
Hook up the camera and transfer the photos onto the PC harddisk drive.
Next Moment after Transfer:
Sort the JPG files into folders that act as traditional albums, name folders accordingly and also rename files accordingly, also QC the photos removing sub-standard ones to maintain reputation as good photographer, also take this time to appreciated the fruits of your work.
Next Available Moment with High Bandwidth Internet Connection:
Find a reliable website (e.g. Sony Imagestation @ www.imagestation.com) to upload the photos, and send out the link via email to all participants of Event. NOTE: In the event that you do not have the emails of all participants, include a plea in your email to mobilise the other participants to help forward the link.
Action for Participants:
Browse through and enjoy the digital album/s and download the photos for personal keptsake as per desire. NOTE: The download feature for high resolution photos (original JPG file) is dependent on the website used to host the photos, the photographer must scout out the good websites with such feature (e.g. Sony Imagestation @ www.imagestation.com).
Possible Situations after Previous Step:
Complaints from participants on lack of knowledge to access the photos, requests for whole album direct due to unwillingness to download only shots of value or unwillingness to take effort in downloading the photos individually. NOTE: Its to the photographer's advantage to educate the participants on the usage of the website of his/her choice so as to minimise complaints. However the requests as mentioned above can be turned down as it is not your obiligation to attend to them, access these requests on a case by case basis. In the event that you desire to respond to a request of the sort mentioned above, burn the files onto a CD-R or CD-RW or copy them onto thumbdrives depending on size of whole archive.
Next Available Meet-up with the Clients (people who made requests):
Distribute photos through the selected media and collect back your medium ASAP.
End of Procedure
PS: The above procedure is only for photographers who have lots of time to spare as he/she has to spend loads of time in front of the PC uploading the photos. This is also for photographers who wish to achieve a high reputation with his/her clients as this set of procedures takes a lot of sacrifice on the photographer's part, but provides his/her clients with the best satisfaction.
ok final note here is tat all these mentioned r FAVOURS granted to people at the photographer's expense and shall not be taken for granted. The photographers r NOT PAID for such services and they DO NOT OWE the participants anything to need to do this in return. Even for the traditional procedure, there's no profit made at all and even more sacrifices on travel, film and 1st developing. Its an ALWAYS LOSE situation for the photographer, thus i make a plea here on behalf of all sacrificial photographers out there, "Please understand when we do not meet your expectations".
